St. Edmund the Martyr
King of East Anglia (c. 841-869); refused to renounce Christ or share his kingdom with the pagan Vikings of the Great Heathen Army, scourged, shot with arrows, and beheaded. His shrine at Bury St Edmunds was a major medieval pilgrimage site, and he was patron of England before St. George.
