St. Dominic
Spanish founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) (c. 1170-1221), called from a quiet canon's life by his journey through Cathar territory in southern France; preached doctrinal renewal in voluntary poverty. Tradition has him receiving the Rosary from Our Lady, though scholars place its origin slightly later. Feast August 8.
