St. David
King of Israel (c. 1000 BC), shepherd youth who slew the giant Goliath, succeeded Saul as king, established Jerusalem as the capital, and was traditionally credited with composing many of the Psalms. Direct ancestor of Jesus Christ; venerated as a saint in the Roman Martyrology. Feast December 29.
