Legendary virgin martyr of Alexandria, said to have refuted fifty pagan philosophers in debate before being broken on a wheel and beheaded under Maxentius c. 305. One of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages, patron of philosophers, students, and unmarried women; one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Feast November 25.
